Cristiano Ronaldo punished for exclusion from Portugal camp: 30-day suspension and fine after clash with Jorge Jesus
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (AP Photo) Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to walk out of Portugal’s national team camp following a reported disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus has cost the superstar striker a 30-day suspension and a 255 euro ($285) fine, with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) calling the punishment “adequate and sufficient”.The FPF announced the disciplinary decision on Monday and confirmed that the 41-year-old admitted the facts underlying the allegations in a formal statement submitted on Friday. His admission and clean disciplinary record were considered mitigating circumstances that helped reduce the penalty. The fine was the maximum allowed after taking these circumstances into account.Ronaldo, who has already apologized for his actions and admitted that he deserved the punishment, can appeal the decision. The Portugal captain did not immediately respond publicly to the announcement.
A rift with the coach sparks a dramatic exit
Controversy erupted during Portugal’s recent Nations League campaign after Ronaldo was left on the bench for the team’s match against Norway on 27 September. Portugal won the match 2-1 but the striker was reportedly frustrated after being left unused despite believing Jesus had assured him he would play around 30 minutes.Ronaldo also accused the coach of breaching a second agreement to publicly explain the situation. Jesus denied making such promises but left the door open for the striker to return after the match. The disagreement escalated when Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp ahead of their subsequent Nations League game against Denmark. The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently launched disciplinary proceedings over the incident, with the case formally opened in October. The federation’s disciplinary board found that Ronaldo had intentionally committed an offense under article 160, paragraph 1, of its disciplinary code. The player also apologized for not acknowledging supporters after the Norway game and for abandoning his teammates, while acknowledging that his behavior cannot go unpunished.
Suspension out of date, Ronaldo ready for comeback
Despite the disciplinary proceedings, Ronaldo is expected to be available for Portugal’s next Nations League game against Denmark on November 14. The suspension began on October 1, the day of the match against Denmark, allowing the striker to serve the bulk of his 30-day ban before his expected return.Portugal managed to progress in the Nations League without their captain, recording victories over Denmark and Norway after the controversy. The results helped the side secure qualification for the quarter-finals.FPF president Pedro Proenca also indicated that the federation wants Ronaldo back in the national squad once the matter is resolved.A relatively mild financial penalty is unlikely to be a major consequence for the Al-Nassr attacker. Instead, the suspension serves as a disciplinary reminder that even Portugal’s most prominent player is subject to the federation’s rules, regardless of his position in the national team.
