Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, accused the CPI(M) of unleashing widespread violence against the public after its defeat in the local body elections. He claimed that there have been several incidents across the state which prove that the party has not accepted the verdict of the people and continues to act arrogantly.
In a statement, Mr Joseph said a number of “fascist acts” had been reported, including vandalism of statues of Mahatma Gandhi, bombings of a statue of Indira Gandhi, armed attacks on homes using swords and machetes and intimidation of political opponents. Such acts, he added, were a serious affront to the democratic and secular values of the state.
The Congress president also expressed strong suspicion that the violence taking place at the home ground of the Chief Minister and CPI(M) State Secretary has the tacit support of the party leadership. According to him, the police remained mute spectators in many incidents.
A statue of Gandhi near the Ramanthali Cultural Center in Payyannur was vandalized. He claimed that the incident was not the first such incident in Payyannur. In addition, the UDF election committee office in Payyannur village was vandalized and a bomb was hurled at the house of UDF candidate PK Suresh.
After the CPI(M)’s defeat in Panoor village, UDF workers were allegedly attacked on a large scale. Congress offices were also attacked at other places including Ulikkal in Kannur, Eramala in Vadakara and Thuruthimukku. Congress workers and even policemen were attacked at Bedadka in Kasaragod.
He also warned that if immediate action is not taken, the situation may spiral out of control. He added that Congress is committed to protecting its workers.
