West Bengal CPI(M) suffered a setback on Monday (Feb 16, 2026) after its state committee member Pratik Ur Rahaman resigned from the party saying he could not agree with the leadership’s views and strategies on some issues.
The CPI(M) office said the party leadership has not yet decided on his resignation. Mr. Rahaman contested the 2024 general elections against TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee from the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha seat.
He resigned from the state committee of the CPI(M) and its primary membership. “I am unable to identify with the views and strategies of district and state leadership on some issues recently,” he said in his resignation letter.
Mr. Rahaman, a young communist leader who rose from student politics, was the CPI(M) candidate in the 2024 Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency, which was won by Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for a third consecutive term.
“We will talk to him (Mr Rahaman),” CPI(M) central committee member Samik Lahiri told PTI. In a recent post on social media, Mr. Rahaman said that one cannot be part of the Communist Party without principles and ideology.
