CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam on Tuesday said the Tamil Nadu government should ensure 5% reservation for persons with disabilities in education and employment in both the government and private sectors.
In his message issued to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Mr Shanmugam said the government should direct officials to pay disabled people full wages for four hours of work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
He said services for people with disabilities who have completed two years of government employment should be made permanent, according to Government Order 151 issued in 2008, and that Government Order 24 should be repealed.
“The Tamil Nadu government should follow the Andhra Pradesh government and provide ₹6,000 per month to the disabled. It should also release assistance to all those who have applied for government assistance,” he said.
