CPI(M) office, 200 more booked for blocking cops

The Thodupuzha police have registered a case against CPI(M) Thodupuzha East area secretary and nearly 200 others for allegedly blocking and obstructing police personnel during an inspection.

The incident took place late on Sunday night at Mangattukavala near Thódupuzha where locals had gathered to watch a football match on a big screen. DYFI activists and residents detained sub-inspector of Karimannoor police station Roy Sukumaran and his driver, alleging that the two officers had arrived for duty under the influence of alcohol.

During the confrontation, locals searched the police vehicle and allegedly discovered a bottle of alcohol.

Shortly thereafter, Thodupuzha police arrived at the scene to de-escalate the situation and escort the officers for a medical examination. While local protesters claimed they were drunk, police officials said initial reports were inconclusive and that blood samples had been sent for chemical analysis.

Following the incident, the police arrested CPI(M) regional secretary Lina Jose and 200 identifiable persons on various charges of interfering with police duties.

Mr. José criticized the police’s actions. “When the sub-inspector and his driver were drunk on duty, the residents alerted the police. Playing cards and tobacco products were found in the policeman’s cap and a bottle of liquor was found in the vehicle. Instead of taking action against the policemen, the police killed citizens who raised a real problem. The party will fight this legally and politically,” said Mr. Jose.

Police officials said the department’s next course of action will depend on the results of chemical tests. Meanwhile, Idukki District Superintendent of Police A Naseem directed Thodupuzha Dy.SP. file a detailed incident report. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has also sought a report on the matter.
