Police said on Tuesday that a case has been registered against a local leader of the ruling CPI(M) who allegedly made anti-women remarks at a meeting.
The Tirurangadi police arrested Sayid Ali Majeed on Monday following a complaint by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activist Jameela. Majeed was elected as a panchayat member in the recent civic polls.
Majeed’s speech at Kodakkal here on Sunday went viral on social media and drew sharp criticism online.
According to the FIR, the accused slandered the complainant and her colleagues from the party with objectionable remarks and threatened them that they should enter politics only if it was convenient for them.
He also threatened the women workers of IUML that they would have to hear such defamation again, the complainant claimed.
In a video telecast by TV channels, Majeed, addressing jubilant party workers standing on an open vehicle here, accused the IUML of trying to defeat him with the help of women.
The video showed the crowd cheering him on as he continued to make comments. He was also heard calling for law enforcement officers to ban him for his remarks.
I am calling on law enforcement to book me for my remarks.
The police registered the case under sections 351 (3) of the BNS (criminal threats) and 79 (insulting the modesty of women).
An investigation is underway and further action will be initiated after that, the police added.
