Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) General Secretary MA Baby on Sunday condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a major attack by Israel and the United States, calling it “absolutely reprehensible”.
“Although we have differences with certain undemocratic measures taken by the Iranian government, the assassination of its supreme leader and other top officials by the imperialist United States and Zionist Israel in violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and international law is absolutely reprehensible and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” ββhe said.
He said what we were witnessing in Iran was the same tactic the US had used time and time again in Latin America and elsewhere.
“We have seen their lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The experiences of Afghanistan, Libya and Syria are before our eyes. The US military-industrial complex is again proving to be the biggest threat to world peace. The Indian government should take the lead in uniting the global south to express its highest condemnation of the excesses committed by the US-Israel and the world is being pushed to fight peace in Israel. Under threat, India should to play a leading role in rallying all democratic voices to stop violent attacks and countermeasures,β he said.
Various political parties and leaders in Kerala also condemned the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
The CPI(M) took out protest marches across the state in the evening, condemning the US for the unrest in West Asia. CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan led a march in Thiruvananthapuram in which hundreds of people participated and carried a banner reading “Humanity Will Win, Not Trump”. Demonstrators held placards calling for peace and condemning the US action and raised slogans against the United States.
Other political parties also organized protests at various places in the district.
Thangal pays homage
Indian Union Muslim League leader Sayyid Munavar Ali Shihab Thangal paid tribute to Khamenei. In a Facebook post, Thangal said Khamenei’s life was “defined by courage and dignity” and prayed that his “brave martyrdom during the holy month of Ramzan” would be accepted by Allah. Thangal said that at a time when many were kneeling before the injustice of the powerful, Khamenei stood firm with unwavering courage, even in the face of death. He described Khamenei’s life and martyrdom as a constant inspiration for both big and small struggles against injustice and prayed for peace for his soul.
In a circular, the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has asked the faithful to hold special prayers in churches for the victims and for an end to the conflict in the Gulf region. KCBC said it is time to stand in solidarity with the victims of war and that world leaders have only just realized that such conflicts are evil. She stated that wars were often aimed at securing one’s own interests and ensuring the complete defeat of the enemy, while the real victims were innocent people.
