CPI (M) state secretary P Shanmugam on Thursday urged the state government to convene a tripartite meeting involving broiler chicken farmers, poultry companies and animal husbandry department to ensure fair wages for farmers.
In a statement issued, he said poultry farmers across the state have been demanding an increase in the cost of rearing and their ongoing struggle has led to an increase in the prices of chickens in the markets.
He noted that the last tripartite meeting was held in September 2013, after which breeding costs were increased by 15 percent in 2013 and another 5 percent in 2014. “The government should immediately hold a meeting to resolve the crisis,” he said.
