CPI(M) criticizes Undavalli land acquisition and demands fair compensation

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday condemned the alleged forcible acquisition of over 2.5 acres of agricultural land in Undavalli near Amaravati by the Andhra Pradesh government and demanded compensation be paid to the affected farmers at the prevailing market rate.

In a statement, CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said the acquisition was done in a reckless manner despite the landowners being small and marginal farmers dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. He urged the government to respect the proceedings before the Supreme Court, hold discussions with the farmers and reach an amicable settlement instead of using coercive measures.

Mr. Rao also alleged that the standing crops were destroyed during the acquisition process and sought action against the police and revenue department officials, who he alleged used force against the farmers and misbehaved with women during the operation.

He claimed that the agricultural land in Undavalli was valued at ₹5 to 7 crore per acre in the open market, while the government reportedly estimated its value at ₹1.18 crore per acre and awarded a compensation of about ₹2.62 crore per acre. He described the acquisition as illegal and criticized the authorities for seizing the land and trying to start construction of a road after destroying standing crops.

Mr. Rao said the government and the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) should resolve the issue through negotiations by offering compensation in line with the prevailing market value. He demanded that the government immediately initiate negotiations with the affected farmers and ensure fair compensation before proceeding with the acquisition.
