With the local polls just days away, the showdown between the Communist Party of India’s Pathanamthitta district unit and one of its estranged leaders is escalating to a whole new level.
District panchayat member Sreenadevi Kunjamma, who defected to the Congress ahead of the local body elections, is now facing a legal salvo from CPI district secretary and vice-president Chittayam Gopakumar.
In his notice, Mr Gopakumar accuses her of spreading “false, politically motivated, defamatory claims” through social media and news outlets to tarnish his reputation. Mr Gopakumar demanded a public apology within 48 hours, the withdrawal of her press statements, a full withdrawal of the misogyny allegations, including the “vulgar smile” remark, and the removal of all defamatory content online.
Once Kunjamma was elected as a member of the CPI, a new UDF candidature in Pallickal added fuel to the political storm.
