CPI (m) here on Saturday organized a protest and accused the government of failing to take effective measures for the Budmer. The party demanded immediate release of 10,000 GBP crore to carry out permanent measures to protect Vijayawady and its surrounding areas that remain vulnerable to serious floods.
Restrictions of the Assembly, Member of the State Secretariat Ch. Babu Rao said that after last year’s flood Budmer had brought noble promises, but could not be delivered, so that the inhabitants remained in the constant fear of repeated calamity.
Many colonies in Vijayawada were flooded when a strong tide into the budmer triggered lightning floods. However, the government still has to provide permanent solutions and most of the affected people are still waiting for compensation. The distribution of approximately 600 GBP crore donated to flood relief lacked transparency, with only 30 crore was reportedly spent for filling in violations. Although the government claims that the mission has been met, the problem remains unresolved.
Several professional committees have submitted recommendations to restrict floods since 1964, but no permanent solution was made. CPI leaders (M) K. Durga Rao, T. Poeen, M. Seetharamulu, Ch. Srinivas, Y. Subbarao, Nizamuddin and others participated in the protest.
