The Andhra Police suffered a setback in Bihar when they tried to transfer an IPS officer, M. Sunil Kumar Naik, after arresting him in Patna, in the alleged torture case of former Narsapuram MP K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju.
A team of police led by Superintendent of Police (SP) AR Damodar arrested Sunil Kumar Naik from his residence in Rajabanshi Nagar, Patna on Monday.
The officer was produced before a jurisdictional court in Patna to seek transit custody, which was denied by the court. The court reportedly ordered the AP police not to arrest the IPS officer for 30 days.
The court pulled up the AP police for not following the inter-state arrest procedure and not submitting the required documents, not submitting the arrest warrant and filing the application in Telugu without translating the documents into Hindi or English.
The competent court also expressed displeasure over the manner in which the IPS officer was arrested.
The AP Police reportedly conducted the operation without informing the Shastri Nagar local police. Local police and lawyers expressed concern over the behavior of the AP police as few officers reportedly came in plainclothes and did not mention their identities. They alleged that the arrest of Sunil Kumar Naik was politically motivated.
The defense lawyers also alleged that the AP police detained the IPS officer’s mother in the room at the time of the arrest.
