A court here on Saturday granted anticipatory bail to PT director Kunju Muhammad in a case related to the alleged harassment of a woman associated with the film industry. Additional District and Regional Magistrate Rekha R. granted anticipatory bail to the former MLA after hearing the arguments of the public prosecutor and defense counsel in detail.
Earlier this month, the Thiruvananthapuram Cantonment police registered a case against the director following a complaint that he allegedly molested a woman at the hotel where they were staying to select Malayalam films for the recent International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).
The defense lawyer said the allegations against the principal were false and pointed out that the complaint was initially made to the chief minister and not the police. The public prosecutor opposed bail, saying the charges were serious and that granting anticipatory bail could affect the investigation.
After considering the submissions, the court granted him anticipatory bail. The court ordered him to appear before an investigator for questioning within seven days and cooperate with the investigation.
He also ordered the police to release him on bail if he is arrested during the investigation. The filmmaker and producer served as a Left-backed independent MLA.
