CorroHealth layoffs: Kerala Labor Minister to act on July 10
The state government and the Department of Labor are actively intervening in the crisis following the mass layoffs by US firm CorroHealth, Labor Minister Bindhu Krishna said. Addressing the media in Kollam on Sunday, the minister assured that the government is exploring all possible measures to protect the affected workers and since the issue came to light, timely measures have already been initiated.
After the initial report of the layoffs, the Regional Labor Officer, in the presence of Uma Thomas, MLA, held urgent negotiations with the company’s management. “While management initially agreed to temporarily freeze layoffs based on these talks, they went back on their word the very next day. Despite this setback, the Department of Labor has not abandoned its efforts and is actively pursuing further dialogue to resolve the crisis,” she said.
In order to solve the situation directly, the labor commissioner is to visit the company on Monday. Additionally, CorroHealth’s top executives are expected to arrive in Kochi on July 10, after which Ms. Krishna will hold a personal discussion with them on the same day. Reiterating her stance, the minister said the state government is deeply committed to protecting the interests of the workforce and will maintain this supportive approach throughout the negotiations.
Responding to the political backlash surrounding the issue, the minister criticized some officials for using the job loss of nearly 800 employees for political mileage. “During such a crisis, leaders should focus on being united with affected workers rather than seeking political gains,” she said. She rejected accusations of inaction and added that the department had been proactive from the start and the matter had already been brought to the attention of the chief minister. “The state would seek Union Government intervention if necessary and remains very optimistic about achieving a favorable outcome for the employees who have lost their jobs,” she said.
