The farmers of corn in the Truvallur district began to harvest their crop. This year, on the basis of the experiment, they sent over 50 hectares, farmers say they are satisfied with the crop. Fifty farmers from the four RK Pet, Tiruttani, Thiruvallangada and Gummidipoondi block participated in the experiment to extend the new crop in the region.
“I’ve always been interested in growing various crops. I even tried sugar cane, but didn’t send it to a sugar mill, but I went from it. Paddy, I would spend more than 7,000 GBP and earned only 6,000 GBP if the harvest was good.” He also fed his cows leaves from corn plants and saw an increase of 200 ml to 300 ml of milk a day.
Gajendran, a farmer from Iluppur in the Truvalllangad block, said he would usually plant vegetables or unpeeled, but this time he decided to go on corn and spent less water and less work on the crop. “Unnatural rains were delayed by a few weeks. Although I had two attacks on the pest, I managed them by spraying insecticides. But I am still satisfied with the growth.”
The collector of Tirvallur M. Prathap said that the idea of introducing corn between farmers was to ensure considerable income in their hands so that they could invest this money back in mechanized agriculture. “This is especially important because of the whims of monsoon. They have cattle and leaves and green waste can be used to feed cows, which will increase milk production. We want to have more integrated farms,” he said.
Sources for agriculture said the MH 6 seed variety was provided by the Agricultural University of Tamil to the farmers. Farmers sell their production a private company near Uhukottai, which produces ethanol. Given that the Indian government announced a minimum support price for corn, farmers will receive a good price, they explained.
