Mayor VK Minimol inaugurated the construction of a dog shelter in Brahmapuram on Monday (March 9, 2026). The decision to build the shelter follows a Supreme Court order that stray dogs should be removed from public spaces and that local authorities must take charge.
In the first phase, the shelter rehabilitates 1,000 stray dogs on one acre of land. The dogs will be transferred to the shelter after the Animal Birth Control (ABC) procedure. The shelter will be built in accordance with the standards set by the Committee for the Protection of Animals.
The shelter will include monitoring, post-operative and quarantine blocks and a department for handicapped dogs. For every 100 dogs, 185 square meters of space was allocated. There will be facilities for cooking food for dogs, storing medicine and camera surveillance. In addition, an adoption center will operate with the aim of reducing the number of stray dogs on the streets.
Deputy Mayor Deepak Joy presided over the function. Health Standing Committee Chairperson Seena Gokulan delivered the welcome address.
