Consider Tourist Annual Income Limit for Mittayi Scheme: SHRC

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the social justice department to favorably consider the request to raise the annual income limit of families of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes to be eligible for the Mittayi scheme.

The Mittayi scheme was launched in 2018 to provide free treatment and follow-up care to children with type 1 diabetes. The current income limit is ₹2,000. Over 2,000 children are enrolled in the program.

The Department of Social Justice informed the commission that when the state’s financial situation improves, it will consider raising the annual income limit.

The commission said the state unit of the National Health Mission should take steps to make type 1 diabetes drugs available to eligible people above 18 years of age.

The commission was told that the government spent nearly ₹ 6.79 crore on Mittayi beneficiaries. An amount of ₹ 3.8 crore was earmarked for the scheme in this financial year.

The Commission acted on the basis of a complaint by the Secretary General of the Type One Diabetes Foundation Shihabudeen A.
