Connecting the Krishna pipeline will save 18 MGD of water during maintenance
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) on Tuesday said it has successfully reduced wastage of treated drinking water and saved 18 million gallons per day (MGD) during the maintenance of the Krishna drinking water supply network. This was made possible by creating a link between the Phase-I, Phase-II and Phase-III main pipelines at Nasarlapally Pumping Station.
The new connection system was put into operation during the recent phase II mainline shutdown. Of the nearly 23 MGD of water available in the pipeline, about 18 MGD or 80% was diverted to the Phase III reservoir for public consumption. About 5 MGD had to be released by washing.
Officials said the arrangement reduced the time required for cleaning from nearly 20 hours to just eight hours, saving more than 12 hours of downtime. The shorter outage also resulted in an estimated saving in electricity costs of around ₹5,000.
During the shutdown, 48 air valves on the main line were also replaced, the work was quickly completed and the water supply was restored in a short time.
Officials said the 24-km long Nasarlapally-Godakondla stretch has several outdated or inaccessible washing facilities. The board said it is considering similar interconnection schemes at Godakondla, Kodandapur and other suitable pumping stations to further reduce water losses during maintenance work.
