The Congress on Monday (Oct 5, 2026) blamed the Narendra Modi government’s economic policies for foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulling out of Indian markets.

In a press conference, senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil claimed that FIIs withdrew ₹4.03 crore from Indian markets between January and September this year and accused the BJP-led government of “disrupting” the economy.

“Foreign investors have released around ₹29,000 crore in the three trading sessions on September 29, 30 and October 1, which is a major concern,” Mr. Gohil said.

He said foreign ownership of the portfolio in companies listed on the national stock exchange had fallen to around 15.8%, a 17-year low, and claimed it was a result of the government’s “failed” economic policies and its emphasis on “crony capitalism”.

Mr. Gohil also raised concerns about the impact of market losses and taxation on retail investors, noting that more than 13 million people invest in the stock market.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement in 2024 encouraging people to invest in the stock market, Mr Gohil demanded accountability from the Prime Minister for the losses suffered by investors.

The Congress leader demanded that the government explain the sustained outflows of FIIs, depreciation of the rupee, rising fuel prices and losses suffered by retail investors.
