Sreenadevi Kunjamma, a Congress MLA who represents Pallickal division in Pathanamthitta panchayat district, has once again landed in controversy after a social media post questioned the credibility of the woman who filed the rape case against MLA Rahul Mamkootathila.
The episode began on Tuesday when Ms Kunjamma, a former leader of the Communist Party of India who joined the Congress ahead of the recent local elections, appeared live on her social media page and contested some of the allegations made by the complainant, a native of Thiruvalla, against Mr Mamkootathila. In response, the survivor filed a complaint with the state police chief demanding a cyber cell probe and legal action against Ms. Kunjamma for allegedly revealing her identity and threatening witnesses. Apart from approaching the police, she has also lodged complaints against Ms Kunjamma with the Congress leadership, including the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and the Leader of the Opposition.
However, Ms. Kunjamma filed a counter-complaint against the survivor, alleging that the survivor intentionally misrepresented and manipulated her statements, exposing her to cyber attacks and damaging her reputation. According to Ms Kunjamma, the survivor’s actions “seem to be a fascist narrative aimed at suppressing even the most basic right to freedom of expression”.
Meanwhile, another complaint has been filed against the state police chief seeking removal of actor Rini Ann George’s Facebook post in which she described the arrest of Mr. Mamkootathila as a victory for former chief minister and Congress leader late Oommen Chandy. Activist Kulathur Jaysingh, who filed the complaint, accused Ms George of deliberately using the names of dead persons and unrelated facts to lend credence to her views, spreading a misleading narrative.
The police had earlier registered a case against Ranjith Pulickal, Pathanamthitta district secretary of the Mahila Congress, for allegedly revealing the identity of the complainant in the rape case against the MLA.
