Tensions flared briefly on Thursday when police prevented Congress leaders from proceeding to the state BJP office as they protested against the central government, accusing it of indulging in political vendettas by filing false and illegal cases against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case.
TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, AICC in-charge TG Meenakshi Natarajan and several Congress leaders staged a sit-in at the Gandhi Bhavan gate when the police refused to allow them on the road.
Mr. Goud said that the National Herald was a newspaper that existed even before independence and recalled that the Gandhi family had sacrificed their property and wealth for the nation. He alleged that despite this legacy, the BJP was deliberately harassing the Gandhi family through motivated cases.
He pointed out that a Delhi court had already quashed the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate and said the Congress would take the matter to the people through peaceful protests and rallies.
Ms. Natarajan said the truth always prevails and claimed that the case once again exposed what she called the vindictive politics of the BJP. She accused the ruling party of trying to erase Gandhi’s name from public life.
