Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has reaffirmed his commitment to 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BC) by taking decisive steps in this direction that BJP lacks commitment to empower BC.
He was speaking at a meeting held at Sanjeeva Reddy Bhavan in Khammam, where the new District Congress Committee President N. Satyanarayana took charge in the presence of many party cadres on Monday.
“While the Telangana government really cares about providing 42% quota for BC, the BJP, which is at the helm at the centre, does not share the same commitment,” said Mr Vikramarka.
He said, “Soon after the Congress government came to power, a survey was conducted to extend 42% reservations to BC as per Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s announcement that a caste census would be taken. A bill was introduced in the assembly, passed unanimously and sent to the governor. The bill has now reached New Delhi and is stuck there.”
He added that a delegation led by TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Gouda staged a dharna in New Delhi and even sought a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek approval of the bill.
“With the court’s directions requiring local body elections to be held, the state government has continued preparations for the Gram Panchayat polls. All arrangements will be made to ensure justice for the weaker sections of the party,” the deputy CM said.
He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked all Congress MPs to raise the BC reservation issue in the winter session of Parliament.
He alleged that BRS leaders were making rhetorical statements, claiming credit without doing anything meaningful.
Mr Vikramarka said the Telangana University of Earth Sciences is named after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who introduced reforms that put India at the forefront of the world economic map. The university is scheduled to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister at Kothagud on Tuesday (December 2).
He urged the party cadre to work with renewed vigor to ensure the victory of “Congress candidates” in the next Gram Panchayat elections.
