Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud reiterated the Congress party’s firm commitment to 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BC) in local bodies and on 18 October declared full support to the BC JAC’s state-wide bandh.
Addressing BC community leaders in a meeting at Gandhi Bhavan on Thursday, Mr. Goud recalled that the Congress has always stood for empowerment and representation of BC.
“The Congress is unwavering in its determination to ensure 42% reservation for BC. As per Rahul Gandhi’s vision, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and his cabinet have conducted a comprehensive caste survey and the State Assembly has passed two bills in this regard which are still awaiting implementation,” he said.
He argued that the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court should resolve the matter legally, adding that Congress will make strong arguments in the Supreme Court to defend BC’s rights. He said the party remains committed to the Kamareddy Declaration which ensures fair opportunities for BCs and there is no question of a return to BC reservation.
Earlier, he was met by the BC Association and various leaders of caste groups seeking support for the bandh called on October 18.
The BC Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising about 170 BC and caste associations, is headed by Rajya Sabha MP R. Krishnaiah. He thanked Mr. Gouda for extending support to the bandh which conveyed the sentiments of BC to all governments and political parties.
Mr. Krishnaiah said that all political parties must work to ensure that the Supreme Court and Supreme Court take a positive decision on strengthening the BC reservation introduced by the Telangana government.
