HYDERABAD
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chairman Akbaruddin Owaisi has asked the Congress government not to disclose the state’s interests in the river water issue in the name of exposing the “misdeeds” of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) during its 10-year rule.
Participating in a brief discussion on Krishna river water at a rally on Saturday, he said that irrespective of the party in power since the days of united Andhra Pradesh, the irrigation sector has been exploited for financial loot and burdened the people with huge debts. Telangana has been discriminated against in the Krishna basin since 1956 and this continued even after the creation of a separate state.
He noted that even Congress legislators from Telangana remained silent when the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy expanded the water abstraction capacity of Pothireddypad master regulator from 11,400 cusecs to 44,000 cusecs. However, more damage was done during the previous government of N. Chandrababu Naidu when he failed to prevent Karnataka from raising the height of Almatti Dam for the first time.
Further, Mr. Owaisi said that one contractor is dear to all governments and even now he is getting many contracts. He was trying to find out why it was not being considered when the government was mandating several others.
“He (former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao) who does not come to the House dictates the agenda and unfortunately his MLAs also disappeared after he announced that he would come and speak,” he quipped.
“AP shouldn’t hurt”
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Payal Shankar said that despite the claims of BRS and Congress on the development of the irrigation sector, the number of pump sets has increased. He was trying to find out why the present government has failed to re-irrigate even a single acre during the last two years. Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu intervened and asked a BJP member to suggest their (BJP) friendly party government in Andhra Pradesh not to harm the rights of Telangana.
Congress members G. Madhusudan Reddy, J. Anirudh Reddy, K. Shankaraiah, T. Rammohan Reddy, V. Veeresham, B. Ilaiah, K. Narayan Reddy, Y. Srinivas Reddy, Ministers J. Krishna Rao and P. Srinivasa Reddy and CPI member K. Sambasiva criticized the B. Sambasivaa government who also spoke and criticized the Raao government’s irrigation sector.
