Congress aims for better performance in future in Thrissur, promises course correction

Aiming for a better performance, the Congress in Thrissur is determined to ensure an outright victory in future elections.

The party could only win four of the 13 constituencies, including one won by the Kerala Congress, in the district despite a strong performance by the United Democratic Front-led Congress in the state.

A joint meeting of presidents of mandalam and block congress committees decided to move forward by identifying and rectifying organizational deficiencies. The meeting noted that sustained work at the grassroots level had yielded measurable gains, including a reduction in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) vote share from over 5.5 lakh to around 3.5 lakh and a reduction in the vote base of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) by nearly two lakh from a total of 2090.30 lakh.

The leadership also claimed that the Congress’s efforts helped to reclaim Thrissur’s secular character, which it said had been eroded after the victory of actor-politician Suresh Gopi as the National Democratic Alliance candidate. In constituencies where the party lost by narrow margins, the defeats were described as “technical”, with leaders expressing confidence that the losses could be reversed through targeted interventions.

Based on the reports submitted by the mandalam presidents, senior leaders will hold detailed discussions to identify the weak stalls. Special meetings will be convened in each constituency to address deficiencies and strengthen organizational structures. The party also plans to correct long-standing electoral shortcomings.

The meeting confirmed that the party functioned in unprecedented unity, especially in the selection of candidates. Concerns were raised about certain leaders allegedly undermining the party in public and the meeting called for correction.

Mandalam and block presidents have expressed strong displeasure over the attitude of several leaders, who they say have failed to recognize the hard-earned gains of party workers.

The district leadership also directed the local Congress committees to actively support the efforts of the government and the panchayat to combat public health issues like Nipah and Shigella epidemics.

District Congress Committee (DCC) President Joseph Tajet presided over the meeting and it was attended by senior Congress officials.
