Doctors at Narayana Hospital in Nellore have successfully performed a rare and complex brain surgery on an 11-year-old boy from Vijayawada who was suffering from Rasmussen’s encephalitis, a rare and severe neurological disorder.
Chief neurosurgeon Dr. NA Saikiran told the media at the hospital on Saturday that the patient, Revanth, was experiencing 10 to 20 epileptic seizures a day due to Rasmussen’s encephalitis.
To treat the condition, an advanced surgical procedure known as a vertical hemispherectomy has been performed, in which the affected part of the brain is functionally disconnected to prevent the seizures from spreading, he said. The child is recovering well after the surgery, he added.
The priority of the neurology department Dr. NS Sampath Kumar said, “Epilepsy surgeries are successfully performed at the hospital due to the combined efforts of neurology, neurosurgery and anesthesia teams, supported by advanced equipment and modern treatment protocols.
He further said that these high-cost operations were provided free of charge under the insurance, EHS and Aarogyasri schemes, with the support of the hospital management and the government. He added that patients came for treatment not only from the entire state, but also from neighboring states.
