Complaints from online gaming platform Winzo say India’s Competition Watch Day investigated Google’s restrictive policy on its platform, which it called discriminatory.
The move has complicated Google’s regulatory headaches in India, where it has been punished at least twice for abuse of its dominance in the Android operating system market.
Google did not immediately respond to requests for comments made after working hours in India and after Thanksgiving holidays in the United States.
Winzo, which offers sincerity gaming, first contacted the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in 2022, after changes in U.S. companies’ gaming app policies continue to exclude Winzo from Google’s Play Store, even if it accepts some competition opponent.
Updated Google policies allow real estate games for Fantasy Sports and Rami, but Winzo was rejected because it also offers other categories of games that Google does not accept, such as Carrom, Puzzles and Rasing in India.
“By granting priority to select application categories, Google effectively created a two-tier market where some developers gained excellent access and visibility while others suffered discrimination, so, a copy of CCI orders said. ”
CCI officials are expected to complete an investigation into the matter within 60 days.
