Commonwealth Games 2026: Boxing, bowls and medals await India on Day 3

India will look to carry the momentum from an eventful second day into Day 3 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday, July 25. The contingent finally opened its medal account on Friday after para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar fought his way to bronze in the men’s heavyweight, capping an inspiring journey from rural Bihar to the Commonwealth podium.

The medal came after an otherwise mixed day for India. Boxer Jadumani Singh advanced to the pre-quarter-finals with a commanding victory over Scotsman Aaron Cullen as the bowl’s lawn contingent continued to impress. Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki secured their second straight win in the women’s doubles and Putul Sonowal maintained his unbeaten run in the men’s singles to boost India’s elimination hopes.

However, there was also disappointment elsewhere. Indian swimmers were unable to challenge for medals despite Srihari Nataraj reaching the semi-finals of the 50m breaststroke, while para powerlifters Ashok Malik, Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi narrowly missed out on the podium. The campaign was also overshadowed by the doping-related suspension of judoka Tulik Maan, one of India’s top medal prospects, before the Games began.

India at Commonwealth Games: Complete programme

With confidence growing in bowls and boxing and artistic gymnastics offering another medal opportunity, India will be hoping to add to that on Day 3. Swimmers Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aryan Nehra open their men’s 400m freestyle campaign, boxer Sachin opens his challenge in the men’s 60kg category, while the women’s campaign against the Wales B 3×3 basketball team continues in the B campaign.
