The third Survey Vessel Large (SVL) class vessel, INS Ikshak, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at a ceremony held at the Naval Base in Kochi on Thursday (November 6, 2025).
The ceremony was presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. The event was attended by senior naval officers, veterans, representatives of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and important dignitaries.

The Navy informed that the commissioning marks a significant step in strengthening India’s hydrographic survey and maritime operational capabilities. A 50-member guard of honor was assigned to the Navy Commander upon arrival at the site.
The ceremony began with the reading of the commissioning order by Captain Tribhuvan Singh, the Commanding Officer. This was followed by the raising of the naval ensign and the commissioning ensign, accompanied by the national anthem and a ceremonial salute. The commission plaque was unveiled by Admiral Tripathi.
In his speech, the Navy Chief described INS Ikshak as a symbol of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ while highlighting the strong collaboration between the Navy, the domestic industry and MSMEs. The ship is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic systems and is capable of functioning as a survey vessel as well as a platform for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and medical support operations.
He emphasized the crucial role of the ship in advancing India’s maritime interests and strategic reach. It is poised to chart uncharted waters, enhance maritime security and strengthen national security in important sea lanes.
INS Ikshak is also the first SVL designed with dedicated accommodation for women, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to inclusivity and modernisation. Its introduction is expected to substantially enhance maritime security and the country’s strategic presence on key sea routes.
After the ceremony, the Naval Commander inspected the ship and interacted with the crew and GRSE officials and appreciated their dedication and contribution towards the successful launch of the ship.
INS Ikshak is now ready to begin operational deployment and strengthen the nation’s maritime interests.
