Google aims to release commercial quantum computing applications within five years, Google Quantum told Reuters on Wednesday that it was a challenge to Nvidia’s prediction of the 20-year wait.
“We are optimistic that we will see real-world applications in five years,” the founder and head of Google Quantum AI Hartmut Neven said in a statement.
The real-world applications discussed by Google are related to materials science – such as building quality batteries for electric vehicles – creating new drugs and potential new energy alternatives.
Google’s predictions reach broader uncertainty about when such a breakthrough occurs. Investors and experts’ forecasts range from several years to at least twenty years.
For decades, scientists have been discussing quantum computing, which promises to provide machines that are thousands of times more powerful than traditional computers. Traditional computers process one number at a time, while quantum computers use “Qubits” that can represent several numbers at a time.
Governments and businesses have been closely watching the potential of quantum computing to undermine modern cybersecurity and other areas such as finance and healthcare.
Quantum computing is similar to artificial intelligence (AI) in some ways. Before Chatgpt was launched in 2022, AI was mainly understood by scientists. Scientists have been quietly making breakthroughs to accelerate the field, but there is no solid understanding of when AI will be commercially useful.
Twenty years
Nvidia’s Jensen Huang said quantum computing is far more than five years old. Huang predicted the practical use of quantum computers for about 20 years in an analyst event at the CES trade show in Las Vegas in January.
Huang said: “If you said 15 years… that might be in the early stages, if you said 30, it might be in the late stages. But if you chose 20 we would believe it.”
Huang’s comments tear off about $8 billion in market value from a small number of sub-calculation stocks. The industry improved in December when Google announced that its new chips were facing important challenges on the spot.
Google has been researching its quantum computing initiatives since 2012 and has designed and built multiple quantum chips. By using a quantum processor, Google says it has managed to solve a computing problem in minutes that takes more time than the universe’s history.
Google’s quantum computing scientists announced another step in the way to real-world applications within Wednesday and five years.
Scientists said in a paper published in the Science Journal Nature that they have discovered a new method of quantum simulation, which is a way to achieve Google’s goals.
