The Sri Sathya Sai District Administration on Saturday launched a ‘Drugs Vaddhu Bro’ awareness campaign in Kadiri town, with senior officials of various government departments and public representatives calling for collective action to make the district drug-free.
District Collector A. Shyam Prasad and Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar flagged off the program at R&B Guest House. Addressing students, DWCRA groups and members of NGOs, the Collector warned that drug consumption poses a serious threat to human survival and social welfare. He urged the public to act responsibly and report cases of ganja and drug use to toll-free numbers or to local police stations. He urged the public to take a pledge against drug consumption.
Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar said drug abuse is a growing challenge that directly affects the youth and law and order. He warned that the possession, consumption and sale of ganja and drugs are criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment ranging from 10 to 20 years depending on the quantity. He disclosed that in Kadiri alone, 40 to 42 persons were arrested in ganja-related cases. The SP stated that preventive detention and external measures were initiated against recidivists.
Later, a public rally was held from R&B Guest House to RTC Circle where participants displayed banners and raised slogans against drugs. A human chain was formed within the RTC circle and the pledge to stay away from narcotics was fulfilled.
