The three men accused of gang-raping a 20-year-old college student near the Coimbatore airport on the night of November 2-3 were on Wednesday handed over copies of the charge sheet filed by the police in the case.
Police sources said the three accused men, T. Karuppasamy Alias Sathesh, 30, His brother T. Yesterday, Alias Kartiik, 21, and their relative M. Guna, Alias Thhavasi, 20, of Maddurai district, were produced before the Additional Mahila Court on Wednesday.
The magistrate gave them a copy of the 50-page charge sheet filed by the investigation team on December 1.
Sources added that the Additional Mahila Court, which is a Magistrate’s Court, will initiate proceedings to close the case by referring it to the Sessions Court. The main district court assigns a session court to hear the case.
Meanwhile, Coimbatore District (Rural) Police officials said they have started the process of seeking custody of the three accused men for questioning over their alleged involvement in the murder of a cowherd under Kovilpalayam police station.
M. Devaraj, 55, a cowherd from Kurumbapalayam near Muthugoundenpudur in Coimbatore district, was found dead in Seraympalayam on November 6, four days after he went missing.
According to the district police, the accused in the gang-rape case has confessed to the investigating officers that they fatally attacked the herdsmen on November 2 at a vacant plot in Seraympalayam, hours before the college student was gang-raped.
The District Police informed the Annur Judicial Court (Kovilpalayam Station Jurisdictional Court) about the confession to initiate proceedings for their custody.
