Cody Gakpo remains with the Dutch squad after the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son
Dutch striker Cody Gakpo is mourning a devastating personal loss after his partner Noa van der Bij announced the couple’s unborn son had died during pregnancy. The heartbreaking news comes as Gakpo is currently out of international duty as the Netherlands prepare for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.
The 27-year-old has been one of the standout players for the Netherlands at the tournament, helping his side top the group with two goals against Sweden. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) confirmed in an official statement that Gakpo will remain with the national team following discussions with his family.
“It is with a broken heart that we share the devastating news that our baby boy died during pregnancy,” Van der Bij wrote on social media.
“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”
She later shared another emotional message after visiting church with the couple’s young son Samuel.
“We went to the church to light a candle. After that, my son Samuel and I went to the church playground.
“There was only one other child. His name was Elijah. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Gakpo also released a brief statement asking for privacy as the family deals with the tragedy.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”
The Dutch Football Association said it would continue to support the Liverpool forward during the tournament.
“We are with Cody and his family. This is a very sad private situation. Of course we were aware of this and we are supporting him in every way we can.”
“Cody has decided to remain with the group after discussions with his girlfriend. We respect their privacy and will not comment further on them.”
THE WORLD CUP NOW HAS MORE WEIGHT
The news comes amid an impressive campaign for Gakpo on the pitch at the World Cup.
The Liverpool striker started all three matches in the Dutch group stage and played a key role in helping his side reach the knockout stages. His brace against Sweden ensured The Dutch finished first in their group and reinforced his growing importance under Ronald Koeman.
The Netherlands will now face 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the round of 16, with Gakpo expected to remain part of the squad despite the huge personal tragedy.
However, football inevitably takes a back seat at such times. As the Netherlands continue their quest for World Cup glory, Gakpo will understandably be thinking of his family as they mourn the loss of their unborn son.
The Dutch team have rallied around one of their key players in the hope of giving him support during what is undoubtedly one of the toughest times of his life.
