Cochin Shipyard launches seventh anti-submarine warfare vessel for Indian Navy

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on Wednesday launched Machilipatnam, the seventh anti-submarine warfare (ASW) vessel in a series of eight being built for the Indian Navy.

The ship was launched by Goolrukh Anand in the presence of Vice Admiral Atul Anand.

The vessel is 78.0 meters long and 11.36 meters wide with a draft of 2.7 meters. Displacement is about 900 tons, with a top speed of 25 knots and an endurance of 1,800 nautical miles, according to an official release.

“The shallow ASW vessels are designed to conduct anti-submarine warfare operations in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations and minelaying operations including subsurface surveillance. Yard BY 529 was named after the ancient port town of ‘Machilipatnam’ along the east coast of India, located in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh,” CSL said in a statement.

CSL representatives were present, including Chairman and CEO Jose VJ, senior officials of the Southern Naval Command and representatives of the Classification Society.
