The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Anmol, while conducting routine surveillance operations in the North Bay of Bengal, on Tuesday (December 16, 2025) detained two Bangladeshi fishing boats along with 35 crew members for engaging in illegal fishing activities in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The ICG informed on Thursday (December 18, 2025) that the detention was made for violation of the Maritime Zones of India (MZI) (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981. The presence of active fishing gear and around 500 kilograms of fish catch on board the vessels clearly indicated that the fishing operations were carried out in Indian waters.
Following the interception, the detained fishing vessels and their crew were taken into custody by the Indian Coast Guard and subsequently handed over to the Frazerganj Maritime Police on 17 December 2025 for further legal action in accordance with applicable laws.
Protection of India’s maritime interests
This operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the Indian Coast Guard to protect India’s maritime interests, prevent illegal fishing and ensure the safety and security of Indian fishermen operating in the region. The ICG maintains heightened vigilance in the Bay of Bengal to deter illegal activities that threaten marine resources and maritime security.
Over the past three months, the Indian Coast Guard has detained eight Bangladeshi fishing boats along with 170 crew members for similar violations, reflecting sustained efforts to enforce illegal fishing in India’s maritime zones.
The Indian Coast Guard continues to maintain a strong operational presence in Indian maritime areas, enforcing the law of the sea, protecting marine resources and promoting the responsible and lawful use of the seas.
