CNG price hike in Delhi: Since Saturday, the price of CNG in Delhi and adjoining cities has witnessed a hike ₹3.89 per kg as confirmed by Indraprastha Gas Ltd. After the price hike, the transport authorities of the state capital demanded an immediate hike in autorickshaw fares. The authorities have also warned of a strike on September 9 if their demand is not met.
Automobile unions warn of strike after CNG price hike
Auto Rickshaw Association and Delhi Pradesh Taxi General Secretary Rajendra Soni said as quoted by news agency PTI, “Delhi government should hike auto and taxi fares with immediate effect within a week as CNG prices have increased by ₹3.89 this morning, suddenly increasing the financial burden on poor drivers.”
CNG prices have been rising for the past two to three months, he noted.
“The government should first increase the fare or provide subsidy on CNG prices. If the fare is not increased, we will go on strike on September 9,” Soni said.
The All India Motor and Goods Transport Association has also drawn attention to the increase in CNG prices.
“Sudden increase ₹3.89 per kg in CNG prices in Delhi-NCR is not just a matter of higher fuel costs. It will have a direct impact on the pockets of the common man, the transport industry and ultimately the prices of essential commodities,” said Rajendra Kapoor, president of the All India Motor and Goods Transport Association.
“With this hike, CNG price in Delhi has now gone up to ₹86.98 per kg,” he added.
CNG price on Saturday
This comes after Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) announced a calibrated price revision ₹3.89 per kg for compressed natural gas (CNG) in Delhi with effect from 6 am on August 29, according to an IGL press release.
The adjustment comes at a time when global spot LNG prices have nearly doubled due to escalating conflicts in West Asia that have disrupted the movement of LNG cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Revision ₹3.89 per kg will come into effect on August 29, 2026 at 6:00 AM to partially offset rising gas input costs and ensure uninterrupted supply.
The revision comes after several increases in recent months. CNG prices increased in May ₹6 in four separate revisions in less than 15 days.
Will CNG prices drop after the US-Iran war?
Commenting on the recent hike in CNG prices, BJP National Spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain on Saturday said the price hike was due to the ongoing geopolitical tension between Iran and the US.
He told ANI, “The prevailing global situation, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and US-Iran tensions, is impacting markets across the world and India is also affected. As we are heavily dependent on imports, the shortage of CNG is causing problems; hence prices have gone up slightly. Once the situation normalizes, prices will come down.”
