CMFRI supplies five lakh green mussel seeds to fishermen and tribal communities in Maharashtra

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has supplied an additional five lakh hatchery-produced green mussel seeds to fishing and tribal communities in Maharashtra. This brings the cumulative supply over the last six months to one million seeds.

“The initiative was aimed at translating marine fisheries research into livelihood opportunities by promoting sustainable shellfish farming along the Maharashtra coast,” CMFRI Director Grinson George said in a statement.

The 2-4 millimeter green mussel seeds were produced in a bivalve hatchery at CMFRI’s Vizhinjam Regional Center in Thiruvananthapuram under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) project. Another one lakh oyster seeds produced at the Madras Regional Station were also supplied to Maharashtra.

Under the project, a CMFRI scientific team led by Chief Scientist MK Anil trained 30 government officials from the Maharashtra mangrove cell in nursery mussel and oyster farming and farming techniques, the organization said in a release.
