Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 13.5-km four-lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on the East Coast Road (ECR) at a cost of ₹2,100 crore. Highways Minister EV Velu was also present during the event held near Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur.
The structure, which will take three years to build, will allow motorists to avoid waiting at traffic lights on the 130 secondary roads that connect to the ECR. “Despite widening it to six lanes, traffic on the ECR is still slow as hundreds of vehicles exit the expressway from inner residential areas. The stretch witnesses around 70,000 vehicles daily. That’s why we need an elevated corridor on this road,” the official explained.
