Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the police and other agencies to enforce strict security measures to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the New Year celebrations in Bengaluru.
The chief minister, who chaired a high-level meeting with senior police and ministry officials on Monday, reviewed the precautionary measures being implemented across the city.
Emphasizing the safety of women, Mr. Siddaramaiah instructed the officials to take precautionary steps to ensure that the celebrations take place without any incident involving harassment or violence against women.
To facilitate safe travel after the celebrations, he directed the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to run a large number of buses after midnight so that people could return home comfortably.
The Chief Minister also ordered special arrangements for crowd management at key locations including MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Koramangala and Indiranagar and emphasized on effective use of modern technology to avoid stampedes or other mishaps.
As part of the security plan, 20,000 policemen will be deployed across Bengaluru, including 1,200 policemen brought in from other districts. He ordered police personnel to be deployed in greater numbers and “Chennamma teams” to be actively used.
Officials said the city has been equipped with four control stations, 78 watch towers, 164 women’s help desks and 55 ambulances to deal with emergencies. In the last three days alone, the police registered 3,500 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.
In a bid to prevent accidents, the movement of two-wheelers will be banned on 50 flyovers in the city on New Year’s Eve.
The meeting was attended by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Political Secretary to Chief Minister Naseer Ahmed, Principal Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh, Director General and Inspector General of Police MA Saleem, Chief Commissioner of Greater Bengaluru Authority Maheshwar Rao and other senior police officials.
Traffic restrictions
Vehicular movement on MG Road, Brigade Road, St. Marks Road, Resthouse Road and Residency road was restricted from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
All types of vehicles are prohibited on all bridges in the city (except the flyover leading to the international airport).
From December 31, from 10:00 p.m. to January 1, until 6:00 a.m., the movement of two-wheelers is also prohibited on the overpass of the International Airport.
Diversions will be made at Old Udaya TV Junction, Khode, Townhall Junction, Chalukya Junction, Domlur and Mehkri Circles to avoid movement of heavy goods vehicles in the Central Business District area.
