CM Revanth seeks talks with Maharashtra on height of Tummidihatti barrage

HYDERABAD

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has written to his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis to meet to finalize the height and construction modalities of the proposed Tummidihatti barrage under the BR Ambedkar Pranahita-Chevella Sujala Sravanthi project.

As the Telangana government decided to fast-track the Pranahita–Chevella project, a series of review meetings were held recently with senior officials and irrigation experts. Based on expert opinion, the government concluded that an FRL of 148 meters would not be sufficient to meet the irrigation and drinking water requirements of North Telangana.

In his letter, Mr. Revanth Reddy asked Mr. Fadnavis to fix a suitable schedule for talks with the Telangana delegation he led to discuss finalizing the height of the barrage.

The Telangana government is proposing to build a barrage across the Pranahita river, a tributary of the Godavari, at Tummidihatti village in Koutala mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, which shares a border with Maharashtra.

Originally, the dam was designed at a height of 152 meters. However, during the Inter-State Council meeting held on 23 August 2016, the Government of Maharashtra agreed to construct the dam at a Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 148 meters and assured cooperation in securing the required clearances.

In the letter, Mr. Revanth Reddy said fresh discussions on the height of the Tummidihatti barrage were necessary to address the water needs of the erstwhile Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Medak districts.

The Chief Minister also said that the extent of submergence in Maharashtra will remain minimal even if the FRL marginally crosses 148 meters. He claimed that increasing the FRL would facilitate the supply of water to Telangana through gravity.
