Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday asked senior officials to work to protect voting rights of people during the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.
In his first meeting with senior officials, the new chief minister sought to emphasize the role to be played by officials in safeguarding voting rights during the SIR process and asked them to set up a SIR help desk.
“No one should lose their voting rights in SIR,” he said, asking officials to raise awareness about the process.
Pointing out that voters may be required to provide documents to defend their voting rights, Mr. Shivakumar told officials to help such persons obtain the required documents.
Expressing concern that millions of people have lost their voting rights in SIR in various states, except Kerala where political parties and officials are vigilant, he said such a situation should not happen in Karnataka.
