CM alleges conspiracy to disturb peace, tells police to be alert about BJP using anti-social elements

Among BJP leaders who accused the police of threatening youths who were preparing to install a Ganapathi idol at T. Narasipur in Mysuru district, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said the state government had asked the police to remain vigilant about the BJP using anti-social elements, alleging that there was a conspiracy to disturb peace in the society.

“He (Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok) is trying to stir up communal emotions. The Ganesha festival must be observed peacefully. Discipline must be maintained during the procession. Caution must be taken regarding electric poles and cables,” Mr. Shivakumar told reporters here.

The Chief Minister was reacting to allegations made by Mr. Ashok, who accused the government of imposing several restrictions and not allowing people to celebrate the Ganesh festival in peace. He demanded suspension of the Jurisdiction Inspector of Police for allegedly threatening youth in T. Narasipur.

Earlier, calling the Congress “anti-Hindu”, Mr Ashok said: “Even the British did not restrict the Ganesha festival. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also sought action against the official.”

Visiting the Leader of Opposition in T. Narasipur, Mr. Shivakumar said, “Let him go wherever he wants. Lies are deities for BJP. Why is he going to (T. Narasipur) police station? He is trying to create an unnecessary problem. He has served as Home Minister, let him understand his limits.” He added, “Let them do what they want. Lord Ganesha is not their property. It (Ganesha festival) is a tradition started by (freedom fighter) Bal Gangadhar Tilak. We support the festival by declaring it a holiday.”

Mr. Ashok said people of all age groups celebrated the festival of Ganesha, which was considered a symbol of devotion and unity. “The police inspector abused his position by threatening the youth not to go outside the mosque, tear crackers, dance or walk in silent procession. He threatened to teach the youth a lesson if the instructions were not followed. The police threats will spread to other parts of the state if he does not rule.”

Meanwhile, Home Minister Priyank Kharge, saying there is no compromise in maintaining law and order and curbing communal violence in the state, accused the BJP of trying to divert the police directive to a communal issue. As a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident, the police have directed the Ganapathi procession to stick to the route map, he pointed out.

Not an abuse of power

The Prime Minister refuted the allegation that the government is restricting the BJP’s actions. Asserting that they will not misuse power by imposing restrictions, Mr. Shivakumar said, “They can hold meetings where they want but within the law. The BJP state president (BY Vijayendra) is unnecessarily giving false statements. They can say and do anything within the law. I have asked (officials) to give permission on whatever grounds they do not want (the BJP. We will not want them to stick to their power restrictions. style of functioning.”
