WHY STUDENTS PROTEST

Organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the protests were sparked by allegations of the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. What started as a student-led demonstration has since grown into a nationwide campaign calling for sweeping changes to India’s examination system, with participants demanding greater transparency and accountability.

Key demands raised by the protesters include stronger measures to prevent question paper leakage, structural reforms in the examination process, financial relief for disabled candidates and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The movement first formed at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 20 before reaching a major flashpoint during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20. Thousands of students tried to march on parliament but were stopped by police, leading to clashes that drew widespread criticism and intensified unrest.

The campaign has since spread beyond the state capital, with demonstrations reported in Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Rajasthan. Social activist Sonam Wangchuk later joined the movement and started an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the students. Although protest organizers appealed to him to end the fast, Wangchuk insisted that it would continue until the authorities guaranteed that the protesters would not face any retaliation.
