CJP: Petition in Supreme Court seeks ban on firearms

Retired Special Director of Intelligence Yashovardhan Azad along with two other victims of gunshot injuries – an artist and another professional – have petitioned the Supreme Court to seek the decommissioning or ban on the use of fully or partially metallic kinetic projectiles/balls fired from pump-action rifles or enforcement firearms for mob enforcement purposes (PAG.)

They are also requesting the provision of exemplary compensation to all victims of pellet injuries caused by the state intervention on July 20, as well as the provision of complete medical treatment, care and rehabilitation for the aforementioned victims.

The petition said that on July 20 around 4.30 pm, two injured petitioners saw the crowd being pushed towards the inner circle of Connaught Place.

It added that while the protesters were fleeing, with many raising their hands as if in “surrender” mode, regardless of any provocation, RAF personnel suddenly fired their pump-action gun(s) and released a wide shower of shrapnel-like projectiles that penetrated the bodies of Applicants Nos. 2 and 3, causing immediate pain and bleeding.
