The main judge of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai said on Friday (July 4, 2025) that the college system for the appointment of judges would adhere to the principles of merit, transparency and inclusive representation and claimed that this process would not be endangered by external pressures.
CJI Gavai on the basis of a felicitation event organized by the Bombay Bar Association Association noted in his honor: “We will accept the procedure of complete transparency. Merit will never be at risk. We will have representatives of all parts of society.”
Cji Gavai, who was mentioned in May as 52. The Chief Judge of India, noted that the effort to increase transparency in the college was already taking place during his predecessor, the judiciary of Sanjiv Khanna. He also dealt with recent concerns that publicly raised from the Dipankar Datta about the alleged intervention in the functioning of the college and stated that all recommended names would be properly monitored and just considered.
Cji Gavai, which focused on its own promotion to the Supreme Court in 2019, revealed that not all members of the college were initially supported. “One of the female judges had some reservations and thought my altitude could lead to riots among the higher members of the Bombai bar,” he said. “But several higher lawyers have encountered a judge in Delhi and clarified the matter.”
He expressed gratitude to the Bombay Bar Association and said, “I will always remain indebted. My promotion to the Supreme Court and now as the main judge of India would not be possible without the support of the bar.”
The chief judge also explained that the Supreme Court should not be considered a concentrated around one individual. “The Supreme Court is not a CJI court. The main judge is only the first among the equals,” he said.
Cji Gavai intentionally avoided public statements or interviews at the time of receipt of the office, he said he had rather let his actions speak. “Rather than the layout of the plan, I decided not to release promises. Let your work speak for myself when I retire in six months,” he added.
For the high pendant at the Mumbai High Court Cji Gavai, “As far as my own High Court is concerned, I can assure that the names, whether it is recommended, will try to follow and as soon as possible, Bombay HC will work in full force, so at least to some extent the issue is resolved.”
