Khoday India, a home-grown firm founded in 1906 that later went on to manufacture a wide range of alcoholic beverages, embarked on a brand rejig after remaining sober in the market for over a decade.
The 119-year-old House of Khodays has announced the expansion of its distillery off Kanakpura Road and production facilities across the country. To begin with, the company will put in ₹50 crore to fund these expansions.
New brands
The firm also said it will soon introduce a number of new brands to strengthen its existing leadership in the Indian alcobev industry. New releases include: three brands of Indian single malt whisky, luxury rum and more.
To signal the start of its reinvigorated market push, House of Khodays has launched Red Knight Premium Blended Whisky. The improved blend also features a new logo, label and bottle, said Aditya Khoday, the fifth-generation distiller in the family and also a director.
According to him, Red Knight was originally introduced in 1967 and was the first whiskey placed in the ČSD defense canteens. That’s when Field Marshal KM Cariappa and Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw visited Khoday Distilleries to personally inspect them, Mr. Aditya Khoday told The Hindu.
Swamy Khoday, managing director, Khoday India, earlier told a media meet that the firm will soon introduce several new brands to strengthen its leadership in the Indian alcobev industry.
Narrating the journey to Peter Scot Whisky, one of the iconic brands from the Khoday stable, Mr. Aditya Khoday said that it was his grandfather, the eldest Khoday, Ramachandra, who traveled to Scotland in the early 1960s and brought the famous whiskey expert, Peter Warren, who created a brand in Bengaluru bearing his own name.
Khoday also plans to enter lifesciences as part of diversification.
Brothers who started
When the Khoday brothers, Ramachandra, Srihari (the most flamboyant Khoday who wore several hats, industrialist, philanthropist, literary filmmaker and music enthusiast), Padmanabh and Swamy founded the Khodays Group more than a century ago, the firm focused on silk, silk products and home-made products for several years. Later, she left all these businesses and merged into a liquor business.
