The Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has launched a massive exercise to digitize its membership in Kerala, its national general secretary Elamaram Kareem said on Saturday.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the CITU state conference in Kottayam, Mr. Kareem said the organization was also working on digital mapping of the total number of workers in various sectors in the state. The initiative in keeping with the changing times and advancement in technology would help the union assess its organizational strength and identify areas that need improvement, he said.

CITU has registered around 4.5 million workers in Kerala since its previous state conference in 2021, he added.

The management also plans to mobilize 20,000 workers from Kerala for a massive rally in Delhi during the first three days of December to protest against the four labor codes.

Meanwhile, sources said Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) state secretariat member KK Jayachandran is likely to be elected general secretary of the CITU state unit, while V Sivankutty is expected to become the treasurer. TP Ramakrishnan is all set to continue as president. The new officers will be elected on Monday after the discussion of the organizational document.

The report presented by Mr. Kareem at the conference also criticized the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government for not ensuring that workers received their rightful benefits. She said the Left Democratic Front government had failed to meet the expectations of the working class and pointed to shortfalls in the payment of social fund benefits.
