
Cinematographer and academic Sunny Joseph has been appointed as the director of the KR Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Art in Kottayam.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Mr. Joseph has worked on 65 feature films in 12 Indian languages, apart from shorts and documentaries, in a professional career spanning over four decades. He also directed a dozen short films and two television series. His feature debut as a director was Salt of the Earth.
A recipient of multiple state and national awards for cinematography and direction, Mr. Joseph also conducts workshops at film schools across the country.
He is a founding member of the Society of Cinematographers of India and is currently the President of the Union of Malayalam Cinema Cinematographers.
He has been the cinematographer for films and documentaries that include Piravi, Nizhalkuthu, Train to Pakistan, Oru Cheru Punchiri, Bimba Prathibimba, Janala, Woh, Goddess and Mango Souffle.
Higher Education Minister R. Bindu said Mr. Joseph’s appointment would pave the way for the institute’s elevation to an international center for film studies.
