The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Baerjee said on Tuesday that she was shocked and disrupted when she found out that the tribunal of foreigners in Assam issued an announcement to resident Dinhata in Coch Behar and declared him an illegal migrant. Mrs. Baerjee claimed that a predicted attempt to “intimidate, exclusion and a goal” was a marginalized community.
The chairman of the Congress Trinamool, who described the “alarming” situation, urged all opposition parties to unite against what it described as “dividing and repressive machines” of BJP.
“Bengal will not stand because the constitutional structure of India is torn,” Mrs. Banerjee published on the X -Social Media platform. Mrs. Banerjee emphasized the case of Uttama Kumar Brajabasi, Rajbanshi and resident Dinhaty for more than five decades.
She described the announcement as “nothing but a systematic attack on democracy”. The main minister said the resident was harassed for suspicion of a “foreigner/illegal migrant”, despite the submission of valid identity documents.
She accused the government led by BJP in Assam to try to “implement the National Citizens’ Register (NRC) in Bengal, where he has no jurisdiction”. The incident comes in the middle of reports on migrating workers from West Bengal, working in different parts of the country that are covered by the Bangladesh with security agencies. More than half a dozen of these workers were brought back by the government of West Bengal after the intervention.
Mrs. Banerjee also raised concerns about the revision of the election roles in the neighboring Bihar and accused the election commission of an attempt to perform the NRC “through the back door”. Mr. Brajabasi told reporters that neither he nor his ancestors had ever visited Assam. He also turned to the local office for the development of blocks with all his civil documents.
“False narrative”
The Secretary General of BJP West Bengal Jagannath Chattopadhyay claimed that Mrs. Banerjee was spreading a “false narrative” about the announcement allegedly issued by a court in Assam. He said that the chief Minister Assam has already decided to exclude the Koch-Rajbanki community from the NRC process and that the state cabinet has decided to withdraw all the pending NRC cases against them.
