A high-quality pirated copy of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey briefly went viral on X over the weekend, reaching more than 2.1 million views within hours before the account responsible for it was suspended and the film removed following a copyright action.

According to Variety , X’s post featuring a high-quality version of the film had 2.1 million views in about two and a half hours on Saturday. The post was later replaced with a takedown notice for copyright infringement, while the account that shared the unauthorized copy was suspended.
The incident comes as The Odyssey continues to draw strong audiences in theaters, despite Nolan’s long-standing emphasis on bringing the film to the biggest screen possible. The director shot the entire three-hour epic on 70mm film, a large-format medium that offers high resolution and is especially suitable for the giant Imax screens.
Universal, which distributed the film, confirmed it had quickly removed the unauthorized copy and warned it would take further steps to protect the film.
“We became aware of the unauthorized release of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will take all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights,” the statement read.
The leak also prompted reactions from users on X, with one account quipping: “The whole odyssey movie in a tweet as nolan intended,” quipped one user.

The Odyssey adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic following Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he makes his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters mythical creatures and dire challenges as he tries to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway portrays Penelope. The cast also includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The film was produced by Nolan alongside his wife Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.
Development of the project began in March 2024, when Nolan began writing the script. By October of that year, Universal Pictures secured the film before officially announcing the project in December.
